Open Track Day at High Plains Raceway : Open track day at the brand new track High Plains Raceway, near Byers, Colo. The event was sponsored by LOCO (Lotus Colorado). MINI5280 club members were invited to attend the June 28, 2009 event. This was not racing, rather it was controlled driving with instructors available and passing allowed only on the two straight-away sections. Cars/drivers were divided into various groups, depending on previous track experience, car type, etc. Each session last about 20 minutes. Long enough to get your car's engine and brakes hot and your muscles tired.

Children's Hospital Charity Ride 2008 : The fifth annual MINI5280.org Children's Hospital Charity Drive delivered toys and a $400 cash donation to the Denver area hospital. MINI5280 members transferred the toys from the MINI's boots (trunks) to a fleet of waiting red wagons for the short trip into the hospital. The group of over 20 MINI drivers and their passengers were treated to a facility tour by the hospital staff.

Western Slope Run 2008 : This year's Western Slope Run was to Ouray, Colorado June 13-15, 2008. Highlights included two nights in Ouray, Red Mountain Pass, the Million Dollar Highway, Silverton and Durango. About 12 MINIs and their drivers/passengers had a good time exploring the scenic beauty of the southwestern mountains of Colorado.

Cars & Coffee : C&C is coffee and cars, a monthly (1st Saturday), informal gathering of owners and their vehicles (any type) around early morning coffee. 'Cinos Coffee and News in Lafayette (northwest of Denver) is the local spot. There are bound to more around. This C&C was started a few years ago by a several Ferrari owners. It's a good way to start the weekend (and the month), chatting with other owners of similar or very dissimilar vehicles in the area.

Wide to Walden : Let's take a "Wide to Walden." The ride was one of the first MINI5280 rides of the year, but not the first to encounter snowy conditions. The 300+ mile wound twip wide to Walden, Colo. began in Denver, north then west to the tiny town of Masonville (it was closed) and north to the Cache La Poudre River (and Scenic Byway). Upstream along the river, over Cameron Pass (10,276 ft) and through the Colorado State Forest in to the town of Walden, famous for its Moose population. After lunch in Walden, we headed south toward Granby after crossing the Continental Divide at Willow Creek Pass (9621 ft). After Granby and Winter Park, we headed over Berthoud Pass (11,315 ft) where we crossed the Continental Divide again (now on the Atlantic side) and head back home to Denver.

Dustball Rally 1000 : "It's about the drive." The Dustball Rally 1000 starts Aug. 25 in El Paso, TX and ends there a day later. This is a "gimmick" rally where teams solve puzzles and avoid being tricked as they find their way to mystery locations. They earn points along the way. Nobody knows where the Saturday overnight location is. Me (Rick) and my sister (Liz) are Team MINI Dust Mites (#77). We'll be sharing driving and navigating responsibilities. We'll be competing against no more than 50 teams for the $1500 1st prize. This is not a race, but we'll be carefully following directions and navigating the MINI Cooper within 500 miles, we think, of El Paso. Run to the Western Slope : MINI5280 members headed to the western portion of Colorado for a weekend of winery touring, monument visiting and museum viewing. The highlight of the trip was a visit to Colorado Gateway Auto Museum, in Gateway, Colorado, where the one and only F-88 concept car is housed. Gateway is about 1 hour southwest of Grand Junction. The Colorado National Monument is next to Grand Junction, as is Palisade, the center of Colorado-grown wines!

MINIs on the Dragon 2007 : MINIs on the Dragon (MOTD) is an annual gathering of MINI Cooper enthusiasts from across the country. MOTD, which takes place in Deals Gap, North Carolina, is named after "Tail of the Dragon," considered one of the world's best motorcycle and sports car roads. This year's MOTD (May 3-6, 2007) was the 5th, but my first. I drove with a group of several other MINI drivers from the Denver area. Our route to "The Dragon" was on backroads instead of interstate highways, where possible and practical, taking five days instead of two.
