Day 2. Viewing the oil pipeline near Fairbanks. Oil is pumped from Prudhoe Bay in the Arctic to the Valdez tanker terminal where it is transferred to ships. The pipeline is about 800 miles long and has 12 pumping stations. The first oil was arrived at Valdez in 1977. Notice the two parallel heat radiators at the top of each support (dark red). These prevent ambient heat from being transferred downward toward the permafrost. About half of the pipeline is above ground.
